Summary

Each year the Orthodox parish of Kondopoga feeds between 35 and 40 neglected children and teenagers during the school summer holidays.

These street children generally have a home, but they prefer to spend their time on the streets, generally because of family problems.  Many have parents who are alcoholics.  All are recommended by social services, who do not have the resources to help.

Where is Kondopoga?

How we make a difference

At the parish the children are not just given food.  They also have a safe space to play, and caring adults to talk to.  At the end of the holidays they are given a pack of stationery for the new school year, clothes and shoes.

For some children this is just the start of a long process.  One teenage girl who used to come to the parish for food was working as a prostitute.  Thanks to the friendship and support offered by the parish, she has now left that life behind and earns a stable living.

SGF helped establish a parish small holding, where much of the food needed to feed the children is produced.  This provides regular employment for a cowman, as well as casual employment for the destitute in the kitchen garden.

How you can help

  • £13.80 will feed one child or teenager one hot meal a day for a week
  • £22 will buy a set of stationery for a child in preparation for the new school year
  • £177 will feed one child or teenager throughout the summer holidays (June-August)
