Food parcels: a lifeline for poor families |
|
SummaryIn St Petersburg we provide food parcels five times a year to those living below the breadline. "I would like to thank you for the help that my family has been receiving from you. I am a widow. I am bringing up four children on my own. I received higher education, but I cannot have a permanent job because I have to look after my children. My whole family has to rely on a widow’s pension and child allowance. I also work part-time as a cleaner in the evenings. It leaves us with about 3000 rubles per person per month [£66].We would like to say a big thank you to St Gregory’s Foundation. We always get fresh and healthy food of high quality. Good cereals (buckwheat, oats, millet, etc), beans, oils (corn oil), juices, tinned stewed meat, dried apricots and plums, raisins, etc. The food stuff is very good." Olga How you can help
Donate nowWhy is your help needed? The father has had an accident, but because his employer had not registered him for national insurance, he gets no sick pay. A mother is left by her partner to bring up her children alone and cannot go out to work while they are young. A family simply have more than two children. These situations can push a family below the breadline. Our food parcels may only be needed for a short time while a family gets back on its feet, but we know how valuable they are. These parcels ensure that children get vitamins and protein in their diet. They bring families into contact with our organiser, Irina Lialina, who frequently can give advice about finding work or solving housing problems. They are a sign that someone cares. Who benefits? We distribute parcels to 120 families and disabled people in St Petersburg five times per year. If we had the money, we would also respond to a request to give monthly parcels to families in particular need. | ||
