Forestry training for Russian teens

Summary

Teenagers in the small settlement of Girvas live surrounded by the forest.  Thanks to their forestry club, run by local biology teacher, Mrs Markova, it could also provide them with a living when they leave school.

What we can achieve

  • 80,400 trees planted in areas deforested by logging.  Without the forestry club, these trees would not be planted.
  • quality vocational training for 30 teenagers
  • hands-on environmental education, and presentations by the teenagers for the whole village
  • constructive and fun activities for teenagers, most of whom are from poor families

This is what has been achieved during just one summer holiday by the forestry club.  With your help we can make sure this is repeated year after year, making a significant impact on local reforestation and ensuring that forestry remains a sustainable industry to support these teenagers through their adult life.

How you can help

Since state funding was stopped in 2002, these summer activities rely on SGF funding.  Other forestry clubs in the area have sadly folded due to lack of funds.

  • £20 will immunise one teenager against tick-borne encephalitis enabling them to work safely in the forest
  • £45 will feed one teenager three square meals per day for one week
  • £8,400 covers the cost of the entire 40-day camp for 30 teenagers

Who benefits?

30 teenagers benefit directly.  The whole community benefits from a tidier village environment, and the replanted local forest.  Being a poor, rural area, local people rely on the forest to collect mushrooms and berries, as well as providing employment.
